When a ThinkPad, IdeaPad, Yoga or Legion goes wrong in Perth, you have four realistic paths: Lenovo’s official channel, a national callout service, a local independent workshop like ours, or doing it yourself. Each one is genuinely the right answer for somebody. Here’s the honest version of who.
Option 1: Lenovo official support
If your laptop is still under warranty, stop reading and go here. Warranty service is free, uses genuine parts, and doesn’t void anything. Some ThinkPads ship with Premier Support and onsite service, which means a technician comes to you, often next business day. That’s a hard combination to beat and we’d never suggest paying us instead.
Out of warranty is where it changes. Standard out-of-warranty service usually means depot repair: your laptop is shipped away, assessed, and quoted. Two things tend to sting. The turnaround is measured in weeks once freight and queue time stack up, and the quote is built around whole-assembly swaps. A liquid-damaged board isn’t cleaned and repaired, it’s replaced, and a replacement motherboard on a laptop that’s a few years old can land uncomfortably close to the price of a new machine.
Option 2: National callout and chain tech services
The mobile technician who comes to your home is the right choice more often than repair shops like to admit. For wifi problems, printer setup, email migration, malware cleanup and general software grief, a callout service is exactly what you want. You don’t need a workshop for any of that, and you’d resent paying drop-off turnaround for a job that takes forty minutes on your kitchen table.
Where they struggle is hardware. A callout tech has no bench equipment in the van: no soldering station, no thermal camera, no ultrasonic cleaner, no stock of Lenovo panels and keyboards. Anything beyond a part-swap they can carry in becomes “we’ll have to take it away”, at which point you’re paying callout rates on top of workshop rates.
Option 3: A local independent workshop (that’s us)
Our lane is out-of-warranty hardware repair, and specifically the jobs where the official quote turns uneconomical. Lenovo quotes a whole motherboard; we repair the failed charging IC or power rail on the board you already own, at component level, in-house at 75B Brewer St in Perth. Lenovo quotes a full display assembly; we replace the panel inside it.
The process is deliberately simple. Drop off, and a technician starts diagnosis within 2-3 hours. You get a phone call with a written quote before anything is repaired. The $85 inspection is our minimum labour charge. Standard repairs run same day to 24 hours; jobs waiting on parts take 2-3 business days. Workmanship warranty in writing.
We’re not the right choice for in-warranty faults or software house calls. We’re the right choice when the fault is hardware, the warranty is gone, and the official quote assumes you’ll replace half the laptop.
Option 4: DIY
Here’s where Lenovo owners have an honest advantage. ThinkPads are among the most repair-friendly laptops made. Lenovo publishes hardware maintenance manuals for the ThinkPad line, parts availability is excellent, and on many T-series and L-series models the RAM and SSD sit under a bottom panel held by captive screws. If you’re comfortable with a screwdriver, a RAM or SSD upgrade on those models is a legitimate Saturday-morning job and you don’t need us for it.
Be more careful with the rest of the range. Thin Yogas and IdeaPads increasingly solder RAM to the board, Legion thermal work means paste, pads and torque you can get wrong, and anything involving the battery, the board or a hinge-cracked lid escalates quickly. The DIY jobs we see go wrong usually started as “it’s just four more screws”.
The comparison at a glance
| Option | Typical cost | Turnaround | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lenovo official | Free in warranty; assembly-swap pricing after | Days onsite (Premier) to weeks (depot) | Anything still under warranty |
| Callout / chain service | Callout fee plus hourly | Same day at your home | Wifi, software, setup, malware |
| Independent workshop | $85 inspection, written quote, component-level pricing | Same day to 24 hrs; 2-3 days with parts | Out-of-warranty hardware faults |
| DIY | Parts only | Your weekend | RAM/SSD on serviceable ThinkPads |
The short version: use the warranty while you have one, use a callout tech for software, use us when the fault is physical and the official quote is a board swap. If that’s where your Lenovo has landed, get a quote and we’ll tell you what it actually needs. And if it’s a fleet of laptops rather than one, our parent business Computer Mechanics also handles business IT support for Perth companies.
