“It used to last all day and now it’s dead by lunchtime” is one of the most common calls we get about Lenovo laptops in our Perth workshop. Battery complaints aren’t all the same fault though, a battery that drains fast, one that won’t charge at all, and one that charges but never past a certain percentage each point to a different problem. Here’s how to tell them apart and what a proper Lenovo repair actually involves.
Pattern 1, the battery drains much faster than it used to
This is simple chemistry catching up with you. Lithium-ion batteries lose capacity every time they’re charged and discharged, and after roughly 500 to 800 full cycles (typically two to four years of daily use) a battery that started at 100% capacity might only be holding 60 to 70%. That’s normal wear, not a fault, but it’s still fixable.
A gradual decline over months, with no other symptoms, is almost always a worn battery that simply needs replacing. You can check the health yourself in Windows: open a command prompt and run powercfg /batteryreport, then open the HTML file it generates. It shows the design capacity versus the current full-charge capacity, if that number has dropped well below the original, the battery is the problem, not the laptop.
Pattern 2, the battery won’t charge at all
This is a different fault and it’s not always the battery. Three things to check before booking a repair:
- Try a different charger and cable. Lenovo chargers and USB-C cables fail more often than people expect, and a worn cable can charge intermittently or not at all.
- Look at the charging port. Pocket lint, a bent pin, or a port that wobbles when the cable’s plugged in points to a physical connector fault rather than the battery itself.
- Check for a swollen battery. If the trackpad has lifted slightly or the bottom panel doesn’t sit flat anymore, the battery has swollen. Stop using the laptop immediately and bring it in, a swollen lithium battery is a genuine safety risk, not just an inconvenience.
If the charger, cable and port all check out and it still won’t charge, the fault is usually on the motherboard, either the charging IC has failed or a power rail has died. That’s a board-level repair, not a battery swap, and it’s exactly the kind of job we do in-house rather than sending the whole board away.
Pattern 3, it charges but stalls at a fixed percentage
Stuck at 60, 80 or 95% every time is a telltale sign of a Lenovo-specific feature working exactly as designed, or occasionally misbehaving. Lenovo Vantage includes a battery conservation mode that deliberately caps charging to reduce long-term wear, useful if the laptop mostly runs on mains power. Open Vantage, go to Device settings and check whether Conservation Mode or a charge threshold is switched on before assuming anything’s broken.
If it’s off and the laptop still won’t charge past a set point, that usually means the battery itself has a failing cell group. Lithium batteries are built from multiple cells in series, and if one group degrades unevenly the pack’s charge controller stops the charge early to protect the others. That’s a battery replacement, not a settings fix.
